How to Remove Mud Stains

Mud stains seem messy, but they are actually one of the easier stains to handle if you approach them correctly. The most important rule is to let the mud dry completely before attempting removal. Wet mud smears and pushes deeper into fabric, while dry mud brushes away easily.

Step-by-Step Removal

  1. 1

    Let it dry

Resist the urge to clean wet mud. Let the garment air dry completely — the dried mud will flake off much more easily.

  2. 2

    Brush off dried mud

Use a stiff brush or the back of a butter knife to scrape and brush away the dried mud clumps.

  3. 3

    Pre-treat with detergent

Apply liquid laundry detergent to any remaining stain and work it in gently. Let it sit for 15 minutes.

  4. 4

    Soak if needed

For heavy stains, soak in warm water with detergent for 30 minutes.

  5. 5

    Wash normally

Launder using the warmest water safe for the fabric. Add a booster like oxygen bleach for stubborn marks.

What Not to Do

  • Do not try to clean wet mud — wait until it dries.
  • Do not rub wet mud, as it will push it deeper into the weave.
  • Do not use bleach on colored items.
  • Do not dry until verified clean.
